Ms. Lindquist is based on our videotaped
analysis and research
on an expert tutor (see transcript). This
research was funded by by both the National
Science Foundation, through a grant to CIRCLE, as well as by the Spencer Foundation . Thanks to both of them
for making this work possible!
Examples showing Ms. Lindquist's Tutoring strategies:
- Use a Concrete
Example : Ask the student to first solve a concrete instance before asking
them to use the variable.
- Explain in
English First : For each portion of the correct answer, ask the student to
explain what their goal is in English before asking them to explain it in
algebra symbols.
- Worked Example :
present the student with the answer and then ask the student to explain
the portions of the answer.
- Decomposition
and Substitution : For each portion of the correct answer ask them a
question in such a way that they only have to do one step at a time. The tutor
introduces a new variable as a place holder.
